Have you faced this question in your interview. As an interviewer, I check whether the candidates try to keep themselves updates along with the time. This question is sometimes asked by the interviewer directly - 'How do you keep yourself updated?'. But it can be asked in a different way like - 'What you do in your free time?'
Don't jump into the answer directly after this question asked. If you are clear about what is asked, then take a pause to structure your answer. If you are not clear, then ask the interviewer what exactly he is looking for.
Most of the time I have seen candidates answering the questions in a wrong way. People are free to use their free time. But interviewer is looking for how you are structuring your answer and how productively you are using your free time. There is nothing wrong if you say you like to spend time with family or travelling etc.
Try to keep the answer in a structured way to impress the interviewer. You can use below framework to answer this question -
☞ Mention that you like to spend time with family. It is good to show that you like to take your time off to spend time with your family. It also proves that you like to spend time to build relationship and socialize which is also important in corporate world.
☞ Mention if you have any hobby, specific skillset (like playing an instrument or you like to spend extra time in gym), if you are involved in any NGO work etc. This proves that you are capable of doing different things.
☞ At the end mention something about how you keep yourself updated. In this world where change is the only constant thing, learning new technologies, topics, domain knowledge etc. are very important to your career. Try to relate your answer with the job role.
Hope this sample answer guideline will help you to prepare your answer. Happy Learning.
