✴️ How to get a great appraisal at the yearend?

Year 2023 has started and almost 2 months passed. In many organizations now it is time to set up the goals and targets for the complete year. This is an inseparable process in our corporate industry. I remember when I started my job in IT industry, I was scared when I had to discuss with my manager during the yearend performance appraisal. In initial years, I could not understand what was actually expected out of me apart from the regular job responsibilities. I used to get feedback that I am doing well, and there are lot of scope to improve further. After that I used to get average rating during yearend appraisal. But over the years I have changed that discussion format. Now it is driven by me rather than driven by my manager. I have learnt the concept to get a good appraisal. I am sure there are lot of candidates like me who faced similar situation. Here is my suggestion to them on how to get good feedback during yearend appraisal process.

1. At the beginning of the year, when goal setting is done by your organization, discuss the goals and objective with your manager who is supposed to give you feedback.
2. Understand each of the category under goal. The goals and objective might not have a quantifiable target, but it is your job to translate that into achievable target.
3. Talk to your manager. Mention that you want to be the best, so please give me specific target which I need to complete before the yearend review.
4. Get in touch with your manager periodically. Not like at the beginning once, and at the yearend once more.
5. Understand what is expected out of you, if required write it down. Specifically, what are the out of project scope which you need to perform - don't forget them.
6. Pick up one of the goals and set a quantifiable target associated with it.
7. Assign timeline to the target
8. Set up milestone about what you need to reach at periodically.
9. Map your progress with the milestone to achieve the target within stipulated timeline.
10. In the year end discussion, all goals shared by your manager should be completed with the KPI or target information which you have achieved,
11. Don’t forget to showcase about the extra items which you do for your organization. Always keep in mind that your manager might say that the project work which you are doing is expected from you. But what is extra you are doing and contributing to the organization which will differentiate yourself from the others? This becomes an important factor when you will be put into a comparison scale with your peers.
12. Prepare yourself when you are going to have a yearend discussion with your manager
13. Be confident when you are describing yourself about what you have done last year.

I believe these are enough to get you a good appraisal. What is your approach to receive a great yearend review?
