How often you get feedback for your work from your stakeholders? To be honest I get feedback from stakeholders periodically. Appreciation or positive feedback are part of our job life, and we always expect to get them quite frequently. But what about the negative feedback or criticism?
We get negative feedback -a. when we are not able to deliver something.
b. when we make mistakes.
c. hen we are not able to meet expectation from a stakeholder.
d. Yearend Review (This one is my favorite)
We are also asked to use the negative feedback as an opportunity to grow by our managers. But how do we do that?
Here is my suggestion how to make the best out of the negative feedback or criticism.
1. Never take the criticism or the negative feedback personally. These are part of job life. It's like - 'There is no light without darkness'.
Listen to the stakeholder what he/she has to say. Listen very carefully each word. If required write it down.
2. Never take action immediately after receiving the feedback
Analyze the feedback, try to understand each and every word of it. Then you talk to other people whom you trust. Try to understand if you are receiving the same feedback or not.
3. It is possible that one of your qualities might be a negative trait for one person, but it may be a positive trait for others. Try to understand and evaluate how that quality is perceived by others.
Once you have a complete clarity then you need to decide how to work upon it.
4. Think and work upon the action plan how to turn that constructive feedback into a powerful characteristic of yours. Apply that into the work
5. Don't forget to receive the feedback once again from the same stakeholder after certain period of time. If you are confident, you will definitely get positive feedback from the same stakeholder this time.
Please note that, honest negative feedback is very constructive feedback for your professional and personal development. We should be grateful to the people who takes out their time and provide this feedback to us.
