As a product manager we should always align our product goals/objective with the organizational goal. If leadership team decides vision at higher level, on product level also we need to incorporate that. At this point of time this target becomes a north star metric to achieve for the product managers. Now how to break down the north star metric and understand what needs to be achieved at product level?
Let us take an example of e-grocery delivery company which is a startup (similar to Zepto, BlinkIt etc.). The leadership team decide to focus on the growth of the company and increase in the revenue. Let us also assume that at product level, the target comes down to increase the revenue by 40% compared to previous year. Now the North Star metric becomes the Revenue to be increased by 40%. How to achieve that?
I have tried to drill down the North Star metric in the attached image. Here you will see how the top-level metric is dependent upon the other metrics. Focusing on a single KPI/ metric won't give you the success. As a product manager you need to understand the complete ecosystem and mutual dependencies of each metrics.
Note: There are other possibilities about how to break down the above North Star Metric. I just tried quickly to explain in simple way. Hope I was clear :)
